The corner of Federal (then Chapel) Street is at left. The Aurora Tavern, seen at left in the 1860s picture, seems to have been first mentioned in newspapers of the period in 1853. In the 1860s photograph the proprietor's name over the door is P.Coyle; he is first mentioned in the local press in connection with the tavern in 1866.1 (In 1865 the proprietor was given as one Patrick South in another newspaper report.2) In July 1868 Coyle announced that he was leaving the Aurora Tavern and setting up another establishment, the Sportsman's Home - see below.3 It's likely then that the 1860s photograph was taken between 1866 and '68.
