The date for the 1880s picture probably lies between late 1884 and 1887; this is the date-range for advertisements in newspapers of the period (on the National Library's Papers Past site) for the Economy Boot Shop, seen on the left (north) side of Victoria Street.

Three buildings are common to both the 1880s and 2026 images: the three and two-storey buildings second and third from left (numbers 39 to 43), and a few doors further down, the imposing four-storey Sargood, Son and Ewen building. The two-storey building was notable, during the 1960s and '70s, for housing the dealer art gallery Barry Lett Galleries. The Sargood building can be seen more clearly in a Burton Brothers 1880s then-and-now treatment on this site, here.
