Note the abrupt drop in street level at far right in the 1860s image; this was presumably a gully containing the stream Te Wai Ariki, a spring whose waters ran through this area down to the nearby Waitematā harbour, long since covered over. It can be seen below in a detail from a Felton Mathew 1841 map of the city.
